No topic dominates the paper and none is small enough to drop, so broad coverage beats depth in a favorite unit.
That is the fact worth building a plan around. A student who has learned to find where the marks are concentrated and lean there, which is exactly what AP Physics 1 rewards, will find nothing here to lean on. This paper does not concentrate them anywhere. What follows works through the published weightings, the exam format that changes for 2027, and the four free-response question types the College Board names in advance, and what each of those means for how you spend the year.
How flat is the AP Physics 2 unit weighting?
The AP Central course page for AP Physics 2 says the framework is “organized into seven commonly taught units of study” and prints a percentage range beside each one, under a column headed “Exam Weighting (Multiple-Choice Section)”. Here is the whole table, with the ranges written out as words:
- Unit 9, Thermodynamics: 15 to 18 percent of the multiple-choice section.
- Unit 10, Electric Force, Field, and Potential: 15 to 18 percent of the multiple-choice section.
- Unit 11, Electric Circuits: 15 to 18 percent of the multiple-choice section.
- Unit 12, Magnetism and Electromagnetism: 12 to 15 percent of the multiple-choice section.
- Unit 13, Geometric Optics: 12 to 15 percent of the multiple-choice section.
- Unit 14, Waves, Sound, and Physical Optics: 12 to 15 percent of the multiple-choice section.
- Unit 15, Modern Physics: 12 to 15 percent of the multiple-choice section.
Two bands, and that is the whole spread. Three units sit at 15 to 18 percent and four sit at 12 to 15. Add the published minimums and you get 93; add the maximums and you get 114. That is arithmetic on the ranges rather than a figure the College Board prints, and what it tells you is how little room the weightings leave to move. Whatever a given paper does inside those bands, no unit on it can be worth less than 12 percent of Section 1 or more than 18.
Put the same numbers on the 42 multiple-choice questions and the consequence gets concrete. A 12 to 15 percent unit works out at roughly 5 to 6 questions, and a 15 to 18 percent unit at roughly 6 to 8. That is arithmetic too, and it is a useful sanity check on any plan that quietly writes a unit off. Deciding you will take the hit on Modern Physics is a decision to hand back about five or six multiple-choice questions before the paper starts.

The comparison is worth making because a lot of AP physics advice is written for the first course and quietly assumes its shape. On AP Physics 1 there really is a place to lean: Force and Translational Dynamics plus Work, Energy, and Power are published at 18 to 23 percent each, which adds to 36 to 46 percent of that multiple-choice section on the same arithmetic, and a triage strategy makes sense. Carrying that habit into Physics 2 costs you, because the biggest lever it offers is worth 18 percent at most. What is on the AP Physics 2 exam?
The AP Central exam page gives the format in two lines. Section I is “42 Questions | 85 Minutes | 50% of Exam Score”. Section II is “4 Questions | 95 Minutes | 50% of Exam Score”. Two halves of equal value, and one of them carries more than ten times the questions of the other.
The multiple-choice half has a wrinkle that goes under-discussed. The page states that “Questions are either discrete questions or question sets, in which students are provided with a stimulus or a set of data and a series of related questions.” A question set is a different reading task from a standalone item: the stimulus takes time to absorb once and then pays for itself across several questions, so the two-minute average that falls out of 85 minutes over 42 questions is an average across two shapes and never a per-question budget. Practicing on discrete items alone leaves the set format unrehearsed.
A few more published details shape how you practice. The exam page describes a hybrid digital exam in which students complete multiple-choice questions and view free-response questions in the Bluebook testing app, and it says they “handwrite their free-response answers in paper exam booklets that are returned for scoring”. It also notes that “A sample free-response booklet is available for this hybrid digital exam”, which is worth getting hold of, since writing physics into an unfamiliar booklet under time is a skill in itself. Calculators are permitted, reference materials are available for the course, and at the time of writing the exam is listed for Thu, May 6, 2027 in Session 1.
The exam numbers changed, and the new ones are already published
Both AP Central pages carry a notice headed Clarifications and Exam Updates for 2026-27. It says the Course and Exam Description “has been updated to include minor clarifications for the 2026-27 school year”, that “These clarifications address course conventions designed to improve clarity and consistency across the AP Physics courses.”, and then the part that matters for a study plan: “The number of multiple-choice questions and the timing for each section on the AP Physics 2: Algebra-Based Exam have also been updated, effective starting with the May 2027 exam.”
The clarifications document the notice links to is where the actual figures live. Under Exam Overview, for multiple-choice questions, it states that “The number of questions was changed from 40 to 42”, with the timing moving from 80 minutes to 85. For free-response questions it states that “The timing was changed from 100 minutes to 95 minutes.” The same document notes, under the Table of Information for equations, that some of the AP Exam conventions were updated in the Reference Information.
So the 42 questions in 85 minutes and the 4 questions in 95 minutes on the exam page are the new numbers, already published, and there is nothing provisional about them. What is out of date is anything still saying 40 multiple-choice questions or 100 minutes of free response. Check the copyright page of any review book you are working from.
The pacing consequence is worth a minute on paper. Multiple choice gained two questions and five minutes at the same time, so the average time per question barely moved: 80 minutes over 40 questions is exactly two minutes each, and 85 over 42 is about two minutes and one second. Free response gained no questions and lost five minutes, so the average per question fell from 25 minutes to 23 minutes 45 seconds. Those per-question rates are worked out from the published totals. The squeeze is entirely in the section where you write by hand, and it is the half where running long on one question steals from another.
The four free-response questions are named before you sit down
The exam page says Section II “contains 4 free-response questions, one of each of the following types”, then lists them: “Mathematical routines”, “Translation between representations”, “Experimental design and analysis”, and “Qualitative/quantitative translation”.
Read that as the gift it is. You know before you begin that exactly one question will hand you an experiment to design or analyze, and exactly one will ask you to move between a qualitative account and a quantitative one. That makes each type a task you can rehearse on its own, in the way an athlete trains four separate events, and it means a weakness in one of them is a weakness in one of the four questions that are certain to appear. A student who has practiced only the calculation-shaped questions has rehearsed one of those four.
The material to rehearse against is the released free-response questions and their official scoring guidelines, which are published for past exams. Work one, mark it against the guideline honestly, and note which of the four types your losses cluster in. Algebra-based, and the second half of a course you have already started
Two things confuse students here often enough to be worth stating plainly, and the College Board answers both in a published comparison of the two algebra-based courses.
First, AP Physics 2 is a continuation. It is described as “equivalent to a second-semester college course in algebra-based physics”, and the guidance is that when you start it “you should have already taken AP Physics 1 and be taking (or have completed) a course in precalculus”. The unit numbers make the same point silently: Physics 1 runs Unit 1 to Unit 8 and Physics 2 opens at Unit 9. It is one numbered sequence split across two years, so the mechanics from the first course is assumed rather than retaught. Physics 2 spends its seven units on thermal physics, electricity, magnetism, optics, waves, and modern physics instead.
Second, this is the algebra-based track. The calculus-based courses are the AP Physics C pair, and the College Board states that “both AP Physics C courses are calculus-based” and that you should be taking or have completed a calculus course when you begin either. How do you revise seven units when none of them is small?
A flat weighting turns the revision problem into a scheduling problem. There is no unit to triage into and none to safely abandon, so what you need is a rotation that visits all seven often enough that none of them goes cold, and a way of knowing which one is currently weakest.
- Rotate instead of blocking. Studying Thermodynamics for two weeks and then leaving it alone for two months is how a unit worth 15 to 18 percent quietly becomes a unit you cannot do.
