Yes, and that turns out to matter more than most students expect. A slide is written to be projected, so it carries three words and a diagram, while the note underneath carries the sentence the lecturer meant to say about it. That sentence is frequently the examinable part, and it never appears in presentation mode or in a printed handout, so it is the material most likely to be missed entirely during revision. Both layers are read here and questions can be drawn from either. The practical consequence is that a deck which looks thin when you flick through it can still produce a substantial quiz, because the substance was sitting under the slides the whole time. If your lecturer leaves the notes pane empty, nothing is lost and the slide text is used on its own.
Only .pptx uploads directly, which is the format PowerPoint has saved by default since 2007. An older binary .ppt needs one pass through Save As, choosing PowerPoint Presentation, and it then behaves like any other deck. The reason for the boundary is structural rather than arbitrary: .pptx is a zipped package of XML whose text can be read out reliably, while .ppt is an old binary layout that would have to be guessed at, and a wrong guess produces questions built on garbled words instead of an honest error. Google Slides and Keynote both take the same route: use Download or Export to produce a .pptx and upload that. If your course only ever publishes slides as PDF, that is fine too, because PDF is read directly and needs no conversion at all.
They contribute nothing, and you are better off knowing that than not.
