ChatGPT Study Mode: How to Turn It On and What It Changes

Study Mode is a learning experience inside ChatGPT that asks questions, guides your thinking, and checks your understanding as you go, instead of only handing over a final answer. Turn it on by typing @study in the message composer on web, or by selecting the plus button and choosing Study on iOS and Android. It is available across ChatGPT plans, on every model.

The activation steps are what most write-ups get wrong, because they were written at launch and never revisited. What follows is the current method for each platform, what Study Mode does differently, what you can feed it, and the limits OpenAI states itself. What does ChatGPT Study Mode actually do?

OpenAI’s help centre article on Study Mode describes it as a learning experience that helps you build a deeper understanding of a topic, where ChatGPT can ask questions, guide your thinking, explain ideas step by step, and check your understanding as you go. That is a behavioural change, not a different model. The same ChatGPT is on the other end of the conversation. What changes is what it does with your question when it arrives.

The documentation names three mechanics, and they are worth reading as distinct things.

• It guides your thinking. A Socratic approach: rather than producing the answer immediately, it asks what you already know, where you got stuck, and what step you would try next. The question comes back to you before the answer comes out.
• It explains concepts in layers. It starts simple and adds detail as you are ready for it, and you steer that directly. You can ask it to slow down, simplify, give an analogy, or go deeper, and the explanation adjusts rather than restarting.
• It checks your understanding. It asks open-ended questions, gives feedback, and helps correct a misunderstanding once it surfaces. You can also ask it outright to quiz you one question at a time.

None of this is a separate product. When OpenAI introduced Study Mode on 29 July 2025, it explained that the behaviour is built on custom system instructions developed alongside teachers, scientists, and specialists in how people learn, reflecting behaviours drawn from learning-science research: encouraging active participation, managing cognitive load, developing metacognition and self-reflection, fostering curiosity, and giving supportive feedback. The stated reason for building it at all was to make sure ChatGPT supports real learning in education rather than just handing over solutions without helping students make sense of them.

OpenAI has been candid about the trade-off in that design. Shipping the first version as system instructions, rather than training the behaviour into the models themselves, was a deliberate choice: it lets the team learn quickly from real student feedback, at the cost of some uneven behaviour and the occasional mistake along the way. Training it into the main models is the eventual plan. That is why Study Mode sometimes slips and answers you straight.

How do you turn on Study Mode?

The entry point moved after launch, so the older instruction to open a Tools menu and pick Study and learn will not match what is in front of you. The current method differs slightly per platform.

On the web. Type @study in the message composer and select Study from the suggestions that appear. Alternatively, select the plus button, type study to search the menu, and select Study from the results. There is also a direct route: going to chatgpt.com/studymode opens a conversation with it already on.

On iOS. Select the attachment button, the plus, to open the tools sheet, then select Study. Typing @study and selecting Study from the suggestions works here too. If slash suggestions are available in your app, typing /study at the start of the message does the same job.

On Android. Select the plus button, then Plugins, then search for and select Study. As on the other platforms, typing @study and selecting Study is the quicker path once you know it exists.

Two constraints are worth knowing before hunting for a missing button. Study Mode works in regular ChatGPT conversations and in Temporary Chats, but not in a GPT or a Project conversation, so check which kind of chat you are in first. Some accounts and apps also show separate Quizzes learning shortcuts, and if you do not have one, nothing is broken: just ask Study Mode directly to quiz you or to build flashcard-style review.

Turning it off is the reverse. Remove the selected Study icon from the message composer: on desktop web, place the cursor next to the Study token and press backspace or delete, or select the small cross if one is shown. Selecting Study again from wherever you turned it on toggles it back off.

Study Mode can also be on without you doing anything. A parent can set a linked teen account so new conversations start in Study Mode by default, and some ChatGPT Edu workspace administrators can require it for regular conversations. In that second case the Study selector does not appear at all, because it is automatic rather than optional.

Which plan do you need?

None in particular. OpenAI states that Study Mode is available across ChatGPT plans globally on web, iOS, and Android, and for all ChatGPT models. Availability has broadened since launch, when it was described tier by tier, which is the most common piece of stale information about this feature.

What it does not do is bend your account limits. Study Mode uses the same plan, model, message, and rate-limit rules as regular ChatGPT. It adds no extra messages and provides no route around a cap you have already reached.

What to put in your first message

Study Mode calibrates to what you tell it, so a thin opening message produces a thin session. OpenAI’s own guidance is to include your level, whether that is middle school, high school, college, beginner, or advanced; the subject and the exact topic; what you are trying to do, such as solve a problem, study for a test, or understand a reading; what you already understand, even if it is very little; any deadline, test date, or exam format; and any course materials that would help.

The examples OpenAI gives are deliberately plain, and they are a better model than anything more elaborate. Adapted from its documentation:

• “I am in my first year of college and taking introductory biology. Help me study for my exam next week on enzymes. Quiz me one question at a time and explain anything I miss.” Level, subject, topic, deadline, and the exact format of help, in four lines.
• “I am learning algebra and keep getting stuck on factoring quadratics. Walk me through one example, then give me a similar one to try myself.” This one names the sticking point, which is the detail that changes the session most.
• “I have 20 minutes to review this topic. Give me the most important ideas, then test me with a few questions.” A time budget is a legitimate constraint to hand over, and it changes what gets prioritised.

Every one of those ends with a request to be tested rather than told. The prompting discipline in the guide to using ChatGPT to study rests on the same idea, and Study Mode makes it the default posture rather than something you enforce each time.

Feeding it your own notes, slides, and problems

Study Mode is more useful pointed at material you actually have than asked to explain a topic in the abstract. You can upload class notes, a syllabus, a worksheet, lecture slides, a textbook excerpt, or a photo of a maths or science problem, and it will reference those materials while helping you.

The tasks OpenAI lists it for follow from that: learning a new concept from scratch, working through homework or practice problems step by step, preparing for a quiz, test, or exam, reviewing class notes, slides, readings, or a syllabus, creating practice questions or flashcard-style review, understanding why an answer is right or wrong, and breaking a large topic into smaller sections. One caveat sits alongside that list in the documentation itself: for graded work, follow the AI-use policies of your school, instructor, or organisation.

If Memory is switched on, under Settings, then Personalization, then Memory, ChatGPT can use saved memories and past chats to personalise Study Mode, remembering your learning goals, the explanation style you prefer, and topics already covered. It works fine with Memory off, just with less carry-over. Where voice features are available in your app, you can dictate or hold a voice conversation with Study Mode instead of typing.

A revision timetable is a different task from a tutoring session, so building a study plan with ChatGPT is worth doing separately, before you start working through topics one at a time.

Troubleshooting, and the limits OpenAI states

Most Study Mode complaints are calibration problems with a one-line fix, and OpenAI documents the fixes directly.

• It is moving too fast. Ask it to slow down, or say explain this like I am new to the topic, or ask it to pause after each step and check whether you understood.
• It is too basic. Ask it to increase the difficulty, or to test you with harder questions.
• It is not using your file properly. Upload a clearer version, paste the key text straight into the message, or tell it which page, section, or question to focus on.
• It answered you outright. Study Mode is designed to ask questions and work through answers with you, but it may sometimes give a direct answer anyway. Ask it to switch back to hints, quizzing, or step-by-step guidance and it will.

The stated limits are not boilerplate. Study Mode can make mistakes, and OpenAI advises double-checking important information, especially for homework, exams, health, legal, financial, or other high-stakes topics. That applies with full force to a tutoring format, because a confident wrong explanation is harder to catch than a confident wrong fact, which is why it helps to know how accurate ChatGPT is for studying before trusting a worked solution you cannot check yourself. Whether diagrams or visuals appear depends on the tools available in your chat. And OpenAI is explicit that Study Mode does not replace your teacher, your tutor, your course materials, or your academic requirements.

Where Study Mode fits with everything else

The interesting thing about Study Mode is not the feature but the direction: OpenAI shipped a deliberate brake on its own default behaviour. The finding in the MIT cognitive debt study was that the cost of AI in learning comes from outsourcing the thinking that was supposed to build the understanding, and a mode that asks what you already know before answering is aimed squarely at that.

These are different shapes of tool, which is worth being clear about. Study Mode is a live, back-and-forth conversation: you talk, it responds, and the session goes where the two of you take it. Excellent for getting unstuck, poor for a fixed revision block, because a conversation drifts and cannot easily be repeated tomorrow. GeniusPal is the other shape, with no chat interface at all: you upload your material and it generates a fixed quiz, flashcard, or recall set to work through at your own pace, with a small number of study-set generations free for the life of the account. Neither replaces the other. What they share is the principle that retrieving an answer beats reading one.

Turning Study Mode on takes about two seconds once you know it is @study rather than a buried menu item. Keeping it on is the harder part, since nothing stops you dropping the token and asking for the answer when the session gets uncomfortable. The discomfort is most of the point.
