What is on the Praxis Core?
Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators is three separate subtests. Each can be registered for on its own, in any order, or combined into a single appointment. Because those numbers are fixed and public, a Praxis Core schedule can be built accurate to the minute, which is a genuine advantage over exams where the length varies by candidate. Rehearse against the real clock from early on rather than treating timing as a final polish, since a pacing habit formed on untimed practice takes weeks to unlearn.
What is a passing score on the Praxis Core?
No universal number exists, and its absence is a design decision rather than a gap in the documentation. ETS puts the position in one sentence on the Praxis passing score requirements page: passing scores vary by state or agency; they are not set by ETS. Two candidates can turn in identical papers, and one is licensed while the other is not, because the two agencies selected different thresholds.
So the opening hour of preparation is research, not review. The Writing subtest is three different tasks in one sitting
Writing catches people out more than the other two, because 100 minutes on a schedule reads like one continuous exam and it is nothing of the kind. It is a 40-minute selected-response section of 40 questions, then two separately timed 30-minute essays, and those three blocks reward preparation that has almost nothing in common.
The selected-response half is rule recall against a clock: usage, sentence correction, revision in context, and research skills. The rule set behind it is finite, which makes it the most drillable material on the whole exam. Someone who can name why a modifier is misplaced answers in seconds, while someone relying on which version sounds better burns a minute an item and still guesses.
The two essays are not one skill performed twice. One invites you to take a position and support it from personal experience, observation or reading. The other hands you two sources and asks you to extract information from them to identify the concerns at stake in an issue. The first rewards walking in with a stock of examples you can reach for. The second rewards reading two unfamiliar passages fast and actually using them, rather than writing around them with opinions. Practicing only the first, which is the default for most people because it feels more natural, leaves the source-based task untested until the morning itself.
Thirty minutes per essay also settles the planning question. There is no room to discover a structure while writing, so decide the shape beforehand, spend three or four minutes outlining, and accept a plain, clearly organized response over an ambitious one you run out of clock to finish.
Where the clock bites on Reading and Mathematics
Divide the published figures and the pacing stops being abstract. Reading gives 85 minutes for 56 questions, a little over 90 seconds an item, and each of those items hangs off a passage or statement you have to read first. Mathematics gives 90 minutes for 56 questions, roughly 96 seconds each, with some requiring a typed numeric answer rather than a choice among options.
On Reading, the bottleneck is almost never vocabulary. It is how efficiently you extract a main idea, an inference or an author position from a passage on first contact, which is a trainable process rather than a talent. On Mathematics, the calculator rule shapes everything. The on-screen tool is a four-function calculator, and personal calculators stay outside the room, so anything you would ordinarily hand to a graphing calculator has to be reasoned, computed by hand, or estimated well enough to eliminate three options. Fluency with fractions, percentages, ratios and rough estimation is worth more here than clever technique. Should you sit the three subtests together or separately?
This is a real decision with real consequences, and the combined option makes it easy to default without thinking. Test code 5752 puts all three subtests into a single appointment of 275 minutes, which is well over four hours of testing. Registering for 5713, 5723 and 5733 individually spreads the same content across three shorter appointments on dates you choose.
Separate sittings suit most people. You prepare for one subtest at a time, sit it while it is fresh, and a disappointing result costs you a single retake rather than a whole day. The feedback also arrives early enough to change how you approach the next one. Against that, three appointments mean three trips, three sets of nerves, and a longer overall timeline, so check current fees and scheduling on the ETS site before assuming the split is free.
The combined sitting earns its place when your deadline is tight, when travel to a test center is awkward, or when all three subtests are genuinely at the same level of readiness. It demands stamina across the full 275 minutes and readiness in three subjects at once, which for most candidates arrives later than readiness in one. A sensible default: if one subtest is clearly the weak one, give it its own date and its own preparation block, and deal with the other two separately or together.
