A meta-analysis of 39 studies of undergraduate science, maths, engineering, and technology courses found that various forms of small-group learning promoted achievement, improved attitudes toward learning, and increased persistence through those programmes. The counterweight is just as well established, and it is the part nobody mentions. When a group tries to recall material together, it produces less than the same number of people recalling separately, an effect called collaborative inhibition. A 2016 meta-analysis in Psychological Bulletin covering 64 studies found the effect robust, and found it got worse with larger groups, with unstructured free-flowing recall, and when group members were unfamiliar with each other. Hearing someone else recall in a different order derails the retrieval path you were following.
The same analysis found the payoff. Collaborative remembering tended to improve what each person could retrieve later on their own. So the honest verdict is that a group session is a poor way to produce answers in the room and a good way to improve what each member can produce alone next week. Who should be in your study group?

How do you structure a study group session?
Give it an agenda and a clock. A two-hour block with no shape becomes ninety minutes of talking and thirty minutes of panic. This template works for most subjects and needs no facilitator training:
- Before you meet (solo, non-negotiable). Everyone reads the agreed material and prepares their assigned section. Each person also writes three to five questions on their section, with answers. That question set is the fuel for the whole session.

Why does teaching each other work so well?
