The reason to go slowly is that only one end of this is under your control. You can force yourself out of bed at any hour you like. You cannot force yourself to fall asleep two hours earlier than usual, and an abrupt jump gives you the early alarm without the early sleep, which is the subtraction again wearing a different hat. The size of that effect under real conditions is striking. Sleep researchers have a name for the gap. In the 2006 Chronobiology International paper that coined the term social jetlag, Wittmann and colleagues described the discrepancy between work days and free days as a misalignment between social and biological time, and found that late chronotypes show the largest swing in sleep timing between the two, accumulating a sleep debt on work days that they pay back at the weekend. The lie-in is the symptom of a schedule that is not working, not the reward for surviving one.
The workable compromise is an extra thirty to forty-five minutes at the weekend, not four hours. If you are genuinely short on sleep, a short afternoon nap costs the clock far less than a long morning in bed, and it does not push Sunday night back. On the mornings when this goes badly anyway, and some will, the fix is a different one: studying while you are already exhausted is its own problem with its own rescue plan.

The camping study is the useful counterweight: late chronotypes moved the most under natural light, so late is not permanent. But there is a floor, and hitting it is information rather than failure. Run the protocol properly for three weeks, which means the steps, the morning light, the protected bedtime, and the weekends held.
