Why do most Anki cards fail?
Most Anki cards fail for the same handful of reasons: they cram too much onto one card, they ask a question with more than one defensible answer, or they were made from material the writer did not actually understand yet. When a card is bloated, you have to recall several things at once, so you half-remember it, grade yourself harshly, and the card starts eating your review time every day. When a card is ambiguous, you grade it inconsistently, and the Anki scheduler can never settle it because it keeps getting mixed pass and fail signals.
The deeper failure is memorizing before understanding. Anki is a tool for retaining what you already grasp, not a substitute for learning it. Force an idea you do not follow into a card and you simply schedule your confusion to reappear forever. Good cards start upstream, when you understand the material, and only then get formulated into small, testable pieces.
What makes a good Anki card?
A good Anki card follows a short set of principles drawn from the minimum information principle and Wozniak twenty rules. Work through them in order when you write a card.
Do not memorize what you do not understand. Learn the concept first, then write a card to keep it. A card made from confusion just schedules that confusion to return.
One fact per card. This is the minimum information principle: the smaller the thing a card asks for, the more reliably Anki can schedule it. Break big facts into several small cards.
Phrase the front so you must retrieve the answer, not just recognize it. A prompt you can answer by rereading the front is passive review, which is exactly what Anki is meant to replace.
Each card should have exactly one correct answer. If two answers are defensible, add context until only one fits, so you grade yourself the same way every time.
When a fact only makes sense inside a sentence, hide the key piece with a cloze deletion instead of splitting the sentence into an awkward question and answer.
Ordered lists on a single card cause errors and are painful to review. Reformulate them into overlapping cloze cards or several small question cards, each with its own cue.
Similar cards blur together. If two cards feel confusable, add a distinguishing detail (a subject, a date, a source) to each so they stop competing during recall.
Trim the front and back to the essential words, and rephrase source text yourself. Concise cards in your own language recall faster and expose gaps that copy-pasting hides.
Where a picture beats words, use one. Anki supports images on both sides of a card, and the popular Image Occlusion feature lets you hide labels on a diagram (anatomy, a map, a chemistry structure) and recall them one region at a time, which is atomic recall applied to visual material.
A before and after: rewriting one bloated card
The fastest way to feel the difference is to fix a bad card. Here is a bloated card that tries to hold four facts at once:
- Front: List the four chambers of the heart and what each one does.
- Back: The right atrium receives deoxygenated blood from the body; the right ventricle pumps it to the lungs; the left atrium receives oxygenated blood from the lungs; the left ventricle pumps it to the body.
That card asks for four facts in a fixed order, so a single slip feels like a full fail and you will dread it. Rewrite it as small, atomic cards, mixing a plain question card with cloze deletions:
- Cloze:
The {{c1::right atrium}} receives deoxygenated blood from the body. - Cloze:
The {{c1::right ventricle}} pumps blood to the lungs. - Basic. Front: Which chamber receives oxygenated blood from the lungs? Back: The left atrium.
- Basic. Front: Which chamber pumps oxygenated blood to the body? Back: The left ventricle.
Each new card tests one fact with one answer, so a lapse on the right ventricle no longer drags the other three down, and Anki can schedule each fact on its own curve. That is the core move behind almost every good Anki card: take one bloated prompt and split it into several that each ask for a single thing.
Should you use cloze deletions, and which Anki card type?
Anki ships with a few note types, and three cover almost everything: Basic, Basic (and reversed card), and Cloze. Basic makes one card from a front and a back. Basic (and reversed card) makes two cards, testing the pair in both directions, which suits genuinely bidirectional facts like a word and its translation. Cloze hides part of a sentence, written as {{c1::hidden text}}, and asks you to recall the missing piece while the rest of the sentence stays visible as context.
Reach for cloze deletions whenever a fact only makes sense inside its sentence: definitions, dates in a narrative, a term inside a rule, or vocabulary in an example. The one rule that keeps cloze cards healthy is the atomic rule again. One blank per card is the safe default; if you find yourself adding {{c2::...}}, {{c3::...}} and beyond to the same sentence, you are usually stacking several facts into one prompt and should split them. Well-made cloze cards feed the spaced repetition schedule clean, single-fact judgments, which is exactly what lets the algorithm stretch the intervals out with confidence.
Common mistakes when making Anki cards
Most weak decks share the same handful of habits. Watch for these:
- Cards that are too big. A prompt asking for a list or a paragraph is several cards in a trench coat. Split it into atomic cards, each with one cue and one answer.
- Ambiguous fronts. If more than one answer is defensible, you will grade yourself unevenly and the card will never mature. Add context until exactly one answer fits.
- Memorizing before understanding. Cards made from material you do not follow feel impossible no matter how often they come up. Learn the idea first, then make the card.
- Verbatim copy-paste. Pasting a textbook sentence hides gaps and makes long, slow cards. Rephrase in your own words and trim to the essentials.
- Ignoring interference. Two near-identical cards will blur together every review. Give each a distinguishing detail so they stop competing.
- Suspending nothing and adding everything. Not every fact deserves a card. Being selective keeps reviews short, which is what keeps you coming back.
