How to Self-Study a Subject Without a Class

How to self study a subject: build a rough syllabus first, find a second explanation when you get stuck, and schedule the tests nobody else will set.

Self-study a subject by rebuilding the three things a class was quietly supplying: a syllabus, so you know what the subject contains and in what order; a second explanation, ready for the moment one source stops making sense; and a test you schedule yourself, because nobody else is going to set one. Reading a good textbook cover to cover is the default plan, and it is the plan with no way of telling you it is failing.

Self-study usually gets described as ordinary studying with the support removed and the difficulty turned up, which is the wrong model. A class is not a gentler version of reading a book alone. It is a piece of infrastructure, and the parts of it doing the most work are the parts that are hardest to notice while they are still there.

Why is self-study harder than studying for a class?

Because losing a class means losing three separate services at once, and only one of them is teaching. The first is the syllabus: somebody who already knew the subject decided what belongs in it, what order it goes in and, most usefully, where it ends. The second is the instructor, whose real value is rarely the prepared lecture. It is the rephrasing, the moment where a textbook explanation fails and a person who has watched fifty students fail on the same sentence says it a different way. The third is the exam. A date on a calendar makes you find out what you actually know, on that date, whether or not you feel ready.

Remove the third one and something specific goes wrong, and it is not laziness. It is that the natural thing to do with material, when nobody is ever going to ask you about it, is read it again.

There is direct evidence about what people do when nobody is checking. In 2009 Jeffrey Karpicke, Andrew Butler and Henry Roediger published a survey in the journal Memory that asked, in its title, whether students practise retrieval when they study on their own. They asked 177 undergraduates to list the strategies they used while studying and rank them. Rereading notes or the textbook was listed by 83.6 percent and named the number one strategy by 54.8 percent. Practising recall was listed by 10.7 percent, and by 1.1 percent as their top strategy. A second, forced-choice question asked what they would do having read a textbook chapter once: 57 percent chose to restudy it, 21 percent chose some other activity, and 18 percent chose to try to recall it.

Hold on to what those students had. They were inside a course, with a syllabus, an instructor and a scheduled exam, and rereading still won by a distance. Take the exam away and nothing at all is pushing back on the default. The reason the default is so attractive is the mechanism behind the illusion of competence: every judgment you make while the book is open is made with the answer visible, and a second pass through familiar text feels a great deal like knowing it. In a class that feeling gets corrected in an exam hall in week eleven. In self-study it is never corrected at all, unless you build something to correct it.

Replace the syllabus before you read anything

The output here is small, and it is not a bookmarked table of contents. It is a numbered list of subtopics in the order you intend to learn them, with an explicit end. Twenty to forty lines is normal for a first pass at a subject, and an hour is enough to produce one.

Two failure modes wait for anyone who skips it, and they look nothing alike. The first is drift. With no list, curiosity picks the next topic, and curiosity is drawn to whatever is interesting rather than whatever is next. Six weeks later there are notes on four fascinating corners of the subject and nothing on its spine. The second failure is the opposite: cover to cover in publication order. That feels rigorous, and it quietly assumes the author wrote the book in the order a beginner should meet the ideas. Textbooks are frequently ordered for reference or for logical completeness instead, which is why chapter two of so many of them is the one everybody bounces off.

You do not have to invent the ordering yourself. Universities publish course outlines, subjects have standard sequences, and a serviceable syllabus for almost anything can be assembled from two or three of them in an afternoon. Write it as a list you can tick, keep it visible, and treat it as provisional: an item you discover was in the wrong place gets moved, and an item you discover does not matter gets deleted. What it must have is an end, because a subject with no stated end cannot be finished, only abandoned.

Replace the instructor by finding a second explanation

When a page stops making sense, the instinct is to read it again, more slowly. That almost never works, and the reason is structural rather than a matter of effort. If an explanation has already failed, rereading it supplies no new information: the same words, in the same order, with the same gap in them. What a class supplies at that exact moment is a different phrasing, from somebody who has seen this particular confusion before.

So the move is to go and get a second explanation of that one specific point. Not a second textbook for the whole subject, which is a way of restarting rather than continuing. One stuck sentence, one alternative treatment: another chapter on the same topic, a lecture video, a worked example, a forum thread where somebody asked precisely this. Different authors put the load in different places, and often enough the missing piece turns out to be one sentence of motivation that the first source assumed you already had.

Two practical notes. First, be specific about what is stuck. Write down the actual sentence or step you cannot follow before you go looking, because a vague search returns another version of the introduction you already understood. Second, put a limit on it: twenty minutes, then flag the point and move on, and come back after the next topic. Replace the test, because nobody else will set one

This is the piece that matters most and it is the one that gets skipped, because a syllabus and a second explanation both feel like studying, and self-testing does not. It feels like an interruption to studying. It is the only part of the whole process that generates information.

The distinction to hold on to is between recognising and producing. Reading a section again produces a feeling of familiarity that is genuine, immediate, and completely uninformative about what you could do with the material tomorrow with the book shut. Producing the content from memory, cold, is the only operation that returns a number. In a class the exam performs that operation on you at a fixed time whether you want it or not. Alone, it happens if and only if you schedule it.

So schedule it in the literal sense, as a slot rather than an intention. A workable default is one short session per syllabus item, a day or two after you work through it, plus a second pass over accumulated items once a week. The delay is the load-bearing part: a test taken straight after reading is answered largely out of working memory and tells you very little. The mechanics are deliberately plain. Close the book. Write out, or say out loud, everything you can produce about that item. Then open the book, mark what was missing, and put those specific gaps back on the list rather than the whole topic. What comes back is not a grade. It is a list of the parts of the subject you had already marked done and could not produce, and in self-study that list is the single most valuable object you own, because there is nothing else in the arrangement that will ever hand it to you.

How do you keep self-study alive through a bad week?

By making the unit of work small enough that a bad week still contains one, and by accepting that this is the context where quitting is cheapest. Failing a course is visible: it lands on a transcript, a tutor notices, other people are involved. Quietly stopping a self-study project costs nothing and nobody finds out. That asymmetry is the whole problem, and it means self-study needs more structure than a class rather than less, which is the reverse of how it usually gets set up.

The plans that end are the ones that require an ideal evening, and most evenings are not ideal.

There is no Thursday, so nothing decides how much to do tonight, and the failure mode is not a frantic weekend but six unhurried weeks of reading that never gets tested. The two do share one dangerous feature: both tend to run on recognition rather than retrieval, so both can feel productive while producing very little. The fix is identical in each case, which is to close the material and answer questions from memory. Cramming rarely has time for that. Self-study has nothing but time and still skips it.
Do you need a textbook to self study a subject, or is free online material enough?
Free material is enough to learn from, but a textbook or a published syllabus is still the cheapest way to find out what the subject contains. That is the specific job it does, and it is separate from teaching. A scattered set of videos and articles can explain any individual topic beautifully while leaving you with no idea that three important topics were never mentioned, because nothing in a search result tells you what is missing from it. One book contents page, or one course outline from a university that publishes them, fixes that in ten minutes and costs nothing. After that, use whatever explains best. Manufacture a smaller deadline than an exam and attach it to something visible.
