The Study Cycle Method: Studying Is Only Stage Four

The study cycle method runs Preview, Attend, Review, Study, Check. Four stages are not studying, and the one that is comes fourth. Here is why the order pays.

The Study Cycle is a five stage sequence for one class: Preview, Attend, Review, Study, Check. Only stage four is what a student means by studying. The other four are a quick skim before the lecture, the lecture itself, a short repair pass on your notes, and a self test at the end. Most people start at stage four.

That is the whole argument, and it stings if you are the student who works hard and still underperforms. A session that starts cold has to do the previewing, the note repair, and the learning all at once, which is how it runs to three hours and ends with the feeling that nothing went in. The four stages around it exist to make it short.

Every instruction quoted below comes from the version of the cycle published by the Center for Academic Success at Louisiana State University, linked throughout so you can read it whole. It is a study skills framework taught by university academic success centres, and the section near the end of this page is honest about which parts of it have actually been measured.

What is the study cycle method?

It is a fixed order for everything you do around a single class meeting, from before it starts to the point where you can prove you learned it. The LSU study resources page lists the five stages as Preview, Attend, Review, Study and Check, and gives each one its own short list of instructions.

Read that list again with one question in mind: which of these would you describe as studying? Skimming a chapter for bolded headings is not studying. Sitting in the lecture is not studying. Spending a few minutes filling the gaps in your notes is not studying. Sitting a self test is closer, though most students file it under checking. Exactly one of the five, the one the page calls a "Focused Study Session", is the activity people picture when they say they studied for six hours.

So the framework is making a specific and slightly aggressive claim. The stage you think of as the work is the fourth of five, and it only behaves well when the three before it have already happened. Skip them and the study session inherits their jobs, which is why it takes so long and delivers so little.

1Preview

Before class. Skim objectives, headings, vocabulary and figures so the lecture lands on something.

2Attend

The class itself. Paraphrase instead of transcribing, and ask how and why while somebody is there to answer.

3Review

Within a day. Fill the gaps and flag the murky parts while you can still remember what you meant.

4Study

The long session. Plan, work, break, recap, decide. This is the stage everyone starts at.

5Check

A self test under test conditions, followed by a verdict on whether your study methods are working.

Repeats
Four of the five stages are not what most students call studying. Three of them exist to take work off stage four, the fifth checks whether it landed, and the loop runs once per class.

Preview: a short skim before the class, not after

The page splits this stage across two sources. For the slides it says "Print/Review for main ideas and new concepts" and "Check Moodle (syllabus) for upcoming class topics." For the textbook it asks you to "Review learning objectives for topics to be covered in class", to "Skim chapter for pictures, graphs, key vocabulary, bolded headings, formulas, etc.", and to "Read summary questions after each section."

Notice what is missing from that list. There is no instruction to read the chapter, and no instruction to understand anything. Every item is about structure: what the topic is called, which words are new, what the chapter thinks the important questions are. You are building an empty frame, and the lecture is what fills it. A student who walks in having seen the word osmoregulation once already spends the first four minutes of the class listening instead of spelling.

The page attaches no duration to the stage. Call it ten minutes, and treat that as our figure and not one LSU published, because the length is set by how long five short instructions take on the material in front of you.

This is also the stage with the weakest evidence behind it, so here is the closest measured result. In a 2018 paper in CBE Life Sciences Education, Pamela Pape-Lindstrom, Sarah Eddy and Scott Freeman added daily preclass reading quizzes to a community college biology course. They compared "three control terms without reading quizzes and three experimental terms with online, open-book reading quizzes; the instructor of record, class size, and instructional time did not vary." Controlling for each student grade point average in their other courses, "students with equivalent non-biology GPAs who are in the treatment group earned 4.9% more total exam points, on average, than a student with the same college GPA in the control group." In predicted terms, the average control student "was predicted to earn 69.1% of the exam points possible, while the equivalent student in the treatment was predicted to earn 74.0% of the possible points".

Four honest qualifications on that number. The design compares terms instead of randomising students, and the authors state the cost of that plainly: "Owing to its quasi-random and longitudinal design, this study also cannot address the hypothesis that unmeasured changes in the student population are responsible for the difference in performance, or the hypothesis that the instructor of record simply became a better teacher over time." They add that they consider both of those explanations unlikely. Separately, they do not claim to know why it worked: the paper lists three candidate mechanisms and then says "The question of causation deserves further study". The course also already had other structure in place, which is why the limitations section warns that "It is not clear whether reading quizzes can be effective in courses that do not have some element of active learning in class." And the intervention was a quiz, so what was measured is preparation plus a small test, and not the bare skim the Preview stage describes. It is supporting evidence for doing something before class. It is not proof that skimming headings is the thing that works.

Attend: what you write here sets the price of stage three

The Attend instructions are about participation first. The page asks you to "Participate in Class (discussions, clicker questions, asking for clarification, etc.)", and adds two logistics items, "Get there early." and "Reduce distractions."

The note taking guidance is the interesting half, because it is a set of restrictions. Under the heading "Take Meaningful Notes" it says to "Use the method that works for you (by hand, computer, outline, etc.)", then "Paraphrase information", "Connect main ideas.", and, plainly, "Avoid copying slides verbatim." It closes by telling you to "Focus on the relationships between ideas or concepts" by asking how and why questions.

Every one of those is asking you to spend effort now that you would otherwise spend later. Transcribing a slide is the cheapest thing you can do in a lecture and the most expensive thing you can do to your future self, because a verbatim page contains no evidence of what you understood. Paraphrasing forces the comprehension to happen in the room, where the lecturer is still available. The question to ask during a class is whether a sentence you just wrote would mean anything to you in six weeks, and if the honest answer is no, that cost has been moved to stage three. Review: a repair pass, and it has a deadline

This stage is short and specific. The page says to "Review your notes from class within 24 hours", to "Fill in any gaps you missed during class to complete your notes", to "Annotate your notes to prioritize what needs to be focused on most during study time", and to "Identify murky concepts and questions to take to instructor office hours, tutoring, or SI."

Two things worth flagging. The 24 hour figure is the prescription LSU publishes, and the page does not attach a study to it, so treat it as a study skills convention with a sensible logic behind it. The logic is that the context which makes your shorthand readable lives in your head and nowhere else, and it decays fast. The second thing is that the fourth bullet is the one people skip: writing down the parts you did not follow, and taking them to a human being, is the only stage in the whole cycle that involves asking for help.

Study: the stage most people start at

Here is the one everybody means. The page calls it a "Focused Study Session" and breaks it into five moves of its own: Plan, Study, Break, Recap, and Choose Next Steps.

Plan. "Set a study goal based on class assignments and learning objectives." Then "Make goals realistic based on your personal needs, attention span, & time constraints." Then set up the environment, which includes "Remove distractions (phone, video games, etc.)." and "Select a study area (desk, study room, etc.)." The goal is the part that gets skipped, and skipping it is what produces a session with no end condition and therefore no way to succeed at it.

Study. The instructions run in a deliberate order. First, "Start by building an understanding of basic concepts to establish a good foundation for your learning", supported by "Read Purposefully" and "Chunk texts into more manageable sections." Then, in the page wording, "Next, actively engage with the material to deepen your knowledge and achieve higher levels of learning", which is where it asks you to "Create a concept map to illustrate relationships between ideas, information, and concepts." Finally, "Learn concepts, then practice for independence", which means "Rework example problems or answer textbook questions" and, the best line on the whole page, "Rework until no resources are needed (notes, textbook, etc.)."

That last instruction is a retrieval test wearing the clothes of a homework tip. It replaces the clock with a criterion: you are finished when you can do it with everything shut. Almost nobody studies to a criterion, because studying to a clock feels finishable and studying to a criterion can fail. It is also the only line in the cycle that will tell you, honestly and before the exam, that you are not ready.

One tension worth naming. The concept map sits in the middle of that sequence, and there is a well known experiment pointing the other way. Jeffrey Karpicke and Janell Blunt had eighty undergraduates study a science text in one of four conditions and sit a short answer test a week later. Total learning time was matched between the two conditions the comparison turns on, since "The total amount of learning time was exactly matched in the concept mapping and retrieval practice conditions". Their 2011 report in Science found that "practicing retrieval produces greater gains in meaningful learning than elaborative studying with concept mapping", and put a size on it: "the advantage of retrieval practice (M = 0.67) over elaborative studying with concept mapping (M = 0.45) represented about a 50% improvement in long-term retention scores". The uncomfortable detail is the ranking underneath: "Retrieval practice produced the best learning, better than elaborative studying with concept mapping, which itself was not significantly better than spending additional time reading." Even when the final test was itself a concept mapping task, the report states that "The advantage of retrieval practice occurred even when the criterial test involved creating concept maps."

Read that as a priority signal and not as a ban. If your study session contains a concept map and no reworking, the evidence says you have spent your time on the weaker of the two activities. If the map is a quick orientation and the session ends with you reworking problems until the book is closed, the LSU order already puts the heavier weight in the right place.

Break. "Stretch, eat a snack, go for a short walk." And then one word in capitals, which is unusual for a university page: "This is NOT the time to check your phone."

Recap and Choose Next Steps. Three questions to close the session: "Did I meet my goal?", "Did I master the material?", and "Do I need to spend more time on these concepts?" Then three to decide what happens next: "Do I need a break?", "Should I keep studying?", "Should I switch subjects?" None of those is answerable without the goal you were told to set at the start, which is the quiet reason the Plan step is load bearing.

The same LSU page separately introduces a taxonomy of learning levels, describing it as "a hierarchy that begins with memorization (rote learning) and proceeds to higher levels of meaningful learning", where "Each level builds on the foundation that precedes it so you can apply knowledge in an increasingly sophisticated and useful way." That is the reasoning behind the order inside the Study stage. Basic concepts first, connection second, independent practice last, because the last one cannot be done until the first one exists.

Check: sit it under exam conditions before the exam does it for you

The Check stage is three instructions. "Test yourself in test-like conditions (time limit, no hints/help, location, etc.)." "Create or take a practice test." And "Put materials away & teach concepts to a classmate or roommate, study group, voice recording, etc. to identify learning gaps."

The phrase doing the work is "test-like conditions". Answering ten questions with your notes open, no timer, and the radio on measures something, and it is not the thing your exam measures. The conditions are part of the test. So is the last item, which is the cheapest self test that exists: explain the topic out loud to somebody, or to a voice recording, with everything closed. The gaps announce themselves in about ninety seconds.

Then the stage does something the other four do not, which is turn around and evaluate the method. The page asks "Are my study methods effective?", and underneath it, "How well did your strategies work?" and "Is there something you should do differently?" That is the loop closing. A cycle that never asks whether it worked is just a routine, and a student can run a bad routine faithfully for an entire term.

Is the study cycle method backed by research?

Not as a package. We searched PubMed Central for an evaluation of the five stage sequence and found none, so the honest description is a teaching framework taught by university academic success centres, assembled from components that do have evidence behind them. What follows separates what has been measured from what is sensible practice, because the two carry different weight when you are deciding how much of your term to hand over.

Strongest ground: the Check stage. Self testing is one of the most replicated findings in the study of learning, and the Karpicke and Blunt experiment above is one demonstration among many. If you adopt one stage of this cycle and ignore the rest, take this one.

Reasonable ground: the Review stage. The idea that a short pass over your notes soon after class pays off is widely taught and easy to defend on its own terms. The specific 24 hour deadline is a prescription from the page, and it carries no study.

Thinnest ground: the order itself. The central claim of the framework is that previewing before class makes everything after it cheaper, and that is the part with the least direct support. The reading quiz study above is the nearest measured thing, and it tested preparation plus a quiz across terms, in a course that already had other active learning in it. Believe the direction. Do not treat the sequence as proven.

None of that is a reason to skip it. A sensible framework built on good components is worth a term of your time, and it is a great deal more useful than no plan at all. It is simply worth knowing which claims you could defend to a sceptical tutor. One curiosity fits that reading. The two ideas with the deepest evidence behind them are retrieval and spacing, and neither word appears anywhere on the page that publishes the cycle. Retrieval is in there in practice, sitting inside the instruction to rework until nothing is open. Spacing is not: the cycle sets a deadline of 24 hours and never asks you back a second time. The vocabulary of the research it happens to match is absent, which is what a framework assembled from teaching experience tends to look like.

How it differs from SQ3R and from a study routine

Two neighbouring ideas get confused with this one, and the difference in each case is what the method is actually about.

SQ3R and PQ4R are reading methods. Their unit is a chapter, and a chapter waits, which is why they can be run at any hour of any week. The unit of the Study Cycle is a class meeting, and its stages are organised around the lecture instead of around the text: two of them are pinned to a clock somebody else controls, since Preview has to happen before the lecture and Attend is the lecture. The front of the two does overlap, because the Survey step and the Preview stage both mean skimming the structure before committing to a close read. The cleanest way to hold both is to treat SQ3R as a method for the reading that happens inside the Preview and Study stages, and the Study Cycle as the frame around the class meeting.

A study routine is about habit. Cues, a fixed time, a fixed place, a streak. It answers when you study and how reliably you show up. The Study Cycle answers a different question, which is what order the work goes in, and it is silent on scheduling. The two are complementary, and a good term probably needs both. If the thing you keep failing at is starting, then building a routine that sticks is the page you want first, and this one second.

What to do on Monday

Pick one class, not all of them. Ten minutes before it, open the slides and the chapter headings and do nothing except collect vocabulary and objectives. Sit the class paraphrasing instead of transcribing. That evening, spend eight minutes filling the gaps and marking what was murky. Then, when you finally sit down to study, notice how much of the session is already done before you start, and keep working the problems until the book is shut.

Run that for two weeks on the one class and compare it against a subject where you are still starting at stage four. The comparison is the point, and it is the only part of this framework that will convince you.
