The light-dependent reactions use absorbed energy to split water, releasing oxygen and supplying electrons to the transport chain. The resulting proton gradient across the thylakoid membrane drives ATP synthase, and NADPH carries reducing power to the stroma.

What it will not do for biology

  • Diagrams, cycles drawn as figures, and labelled micrographs carry no readable text. A handout that is mostly pictures produces very little.
  • It does not draw, and cannot ask you to label anything. For diagram recall, an image occlusion tool is the right choice.
  • It has no syllabus of its own, so a topic missing from your upload is missing from your questions, and it will not warn you.

Biology student questions

Does it cope with the sheer amount of terminology?

It handles it well, and it tends to do something more useful than drilling the vocabulary directly. Because the questions come from the sentences in your document, and a biology handout spends most of its words explaining what things do rather than listing what they are called, the questions that come back are usually about mechanisms with the terminology embedded in them. That is the better way round: a question asking what happens when an enzyme is inhibited requires you to know the name and the function, whereas a question asking what the enzyme is called requires only the name. If you specifically want naked vocabulary drilling, a glossary pasted into the box will produce exactly that, since it can only ever work with the propositions your own material happens to contain.

What about diagrams, cycles, and pathways?

Anything drawn as a figure is invisible to it, and that is a real limitation in biology specifically because so much of the subject is taught in diagrams. A cycle presented as a labelled circle carries no text to read, and a micrograph carries none at all. What does work is the prose around the figure, and in most textbooks and handouts the pathway is also explained in sentences somewhere nearby, so uploading the chapter rather than the figure alone usually recovers the content. For diagram recall specifically, meaning being able to reproduce or label a figure from memory, an image occlusion tool is the correct choice and Anki with the relevant add-on is the standard one. Typing the labels into the box also works and is faster than it sounds.

Is it suitable for both school and degree-level biology?

Yes, because it takes its level from your material rather than from a setting you choose. Upload a GCSE revision handout and the questions come back at that level, because those are the propositions in the document. Upload a third-year molecular biology chapter and they come back correspondingly harder. There is no year group to select and no difficulty slider, which is deliberate: the level of a question should follow the source rather than a guess about who is asking. The one thing to be aware of is that thin material produces thin questions. A page of bullet-point revision notes that compresses a topic into six words per line gives the reader very little to work with, so a fuller handout or the chapter itself usually produces a noticeably better set.
