How to Catch Up on Schoolwork After Falling Behind

Catching up is a triage problem before it is a study problem. Protect the current week first so the gap stops widening, then work the backlog newest to oldest, keeping only the topics that later material actually depends on. Everything else gets written off deliberately. Order matters more than effort here, and the obvious order is the wrong one.
The instinct when you are behind on schoolwork is to go back to the first thing you missed and read forward until you are level. That plan is why most catch-up attempts die in about a week. It puts your freshest attention on the oldest, coldest material, it treats every missed topic as equally worth recovering, and it quietly guarantees that the class you attend on Thursday adds a new item to the pile faster than you are clearing it.
Why does catching up on schoolwork usually fail?
Because a backlog behaves like debt, and reading forward from the beginning is the equivalent of paying it off in the order it was borrowed while still borrowing every week. Three things go wrong at once.
The first is arithmetic. If you are four weeks behind and you spend all your study time on week one, you finish that stretch five weeks behind. Nothing about your effort was wrong. The allocation was. Any plan that gives the backlog priority over the live course is a plan to fall further behind while working hard, which is the specific frustration that makes students give up on catching up altogether.
The second is that missed material is not a list of equal items. Some of it is load-bearing: later lectures assume it, and without it the next four weeks read like a foreign language. Some of it is a self-contained topic that was examined once and will never be mentioned again. Treating those two the same way is the most expensive mistake available, and chronological order treats them exactly the same way.
The third is emotional and rarely named. A backlog with no deadline attached produces avoidance rather than panic. Looking at the pile feels bad, so you do not look, so the pile grows, so looking feels worse. This is a different loop from ordinary procrastination on a single task, and shrinking the task does not resolve it. What resolves it is making the pile finite by deciding, out loud and in writing, which parts of it you are never going to study.
The current week gets first claim on your study time. The backlog gets the remainder, never the reverse.

How do you stop the backlog from growing?
Give today first claim, before anything else gets scheduled. This is a ratio decision, and it is the only one on this page that has to hold every single day rather than once.
A workable split for most students is that the current week takes roughly two thirds of available study time and the backlog takes the rest. The exact fraction matters far less than the direction: as long as the live course is winning, the gap is closing, even slowly. As soon as the backlog is winning, you are running a deficit no amount of weekend effort will cover. If you have several courses in this state, the split has to be made across all of them at once rather than course by course, which is the same discipline that studying for multiple exams at once demands.
Two things make the current week much cheaper to hold. Reviewing each class within a day of attending it turns an hour of relearning later into about ten minutes now, which is the argument behind reviewing your notes after class. And if there is an assessment inside the next few days, that assessment temporarily outranks both the current week and the backlog, and it should be handled as a compressed pre-exam run rather than folded into a recovery plan.
How do you decide what in the backlog is worth recovering?
Sort by dependency. For each missed topic, ask a single question: does anything taught since then assume I know this? That is a different sorting key from mark weight, and for a backlog it is the right one.
Mark weight tells you what an exam will reward. Dependency tells you what is currently blocking you from understanding anything else. Those come apart constantly. A two-mark definition introduced in week two can be the term every subsequent lecture is built on, while a heavily weighted case study can sit in complete isolation and cost you nothing until revision. When you are behind, the blocking material has to be cleared first, because until it is, every hour you spend on the live course is running at a fraction of its normal value.
You can usually build this list in twenty minutes without opening a single set of notes. Read the course outline or module descriptions in order and mark, for each missed week, whether later weeks refer back to it. Skim the introduction section of the most recent lecture, since it will typically name the concepts it is building on. Notice which terms in this week's material you cannot define. Each undefined term is a pointer straight to the backlog item worth recovering.
Three tiers is enough. Blocking topics that this week depends on. Supporting topics you will want before an exam but that nothing currently needs. Isolated topics that neither block anything nor are likely to be tested again. That third tier is where the write-off lives.
Why work the backlog newest first?
Because recovering recent material is measurably cheaper than recovering old material, and because the recent material is what this week is standing on. Both reasons point the same way, and both point against the chronological instinct.
The cost side has a number attached. Memory researchers measure re-learning with a savings score, defined in Jaap Murre and Joeri Dros's 2015 replication of the Ebbinghaus forgetting curve as the relative amount of time saved on the second learning trial as a result of having had the first. Their subject re-learned lists after a range of delays, and the savings fell away sharply with time: about 32 per cent after one day, about 17 per cent after six days, and about 4 per cent after 31 days. Read the shape rather than the exact figures, since this is one person learning nonsense syllables, which Ebbinghaus chose precisely because they carried no meaning to hang on to and which are therefore the hardest possible case. Real course material, with structure and meaning, holds up considerably better. The direction is what transfers: material you sat through last week is still partly there and comes back quickly, while material from two months ago has decayed close to the point where you are learning it for the first time.
That reframes what a backlog costs. Six weeks behind is not six weeks of work, because the recent portion re-learns at a steep discount. It is also not a uniform pile, because the discount shrinks the further back you reach. Working newest first spends your time where the discount is largest and where the payoff to the live course is most immediate.
What should you write off permanently?
The isolated tier, in writing, with the decision recorded somewhere you will see it. This is the step students skip, and skipping it is what keeps a backlog psychologically infinite.
There is a real difference between material you have not studied yet and material you have decided not to study. The first one follows you around. It surfaces every time you sit down, costs a small amount of attention, generates a small amount of guilt, and still does not get studied. The second one is closed. Writing the decision down is what converts one into the other, and the conversion is free.
Reasonable candidates for a permanent write-off: a unit that has already been assessed in a modular course and will not be revisited, optional or extension reading that no assessment references, a topic the syllabus marks as background, and anything from the oldest end of the backlog that nothing since has depended on. Be honest that this has a cost. You are accepting that a few marks are gone in exchange for the rest of the course working. That trade is almost always worth making, and refusing to make it is how students end up recovering nothing at all while feeling responsible for everything.
One caveat worth checking before you write anything off: if the course ends in a cumulative final, old material gets a second chance to be tested and the write-off list should be much shorter. Confirm the assessment structure in the syllabus first, since it changes the answer.
How do you rebuild a class you have no notes for?
Source a substitute, then convert it into questions instead of copying it. Missing a class leaves you with nothing rather than with thin notes, so recovery starts a step earlier than ordinary revision does.
In rough order of quality, the substitutes are: a recording of the session, a classmate whose notes you trust, the textbook chapter the lecture was based on, and the slide deck by itself. Slides are the weakest option because a deck is a prompt for a speaker and the reasoning was said out loud rather than written down, which is why studying from PowerPoint slides requires expanding each bullet back into a full claim before it means anything.
Whatever the source, the recovery move is the same and it is not transcription. Copying a recording into notes produces a document you have never tested yourself on, which feels like catching up and leaves almost nothing behind. Work out instead which questions the session was answering, write those questions down, attempt them from memory, and only then check against the source. A missed lecture rebuilt into eight or ten questions you can answer unprompted is genuinely recovered. The same lecture rebuilt into four pages of neat notes is still missed.
How long will catching up actually take?
Longer than you think, and longer than your pessimistic estimate too. This is the best documented failure in planning, and a catch-up schedule is close to the ideal conditions for producing it.
In Exploring the Planning Fallacy, published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology in 1994, Roger Buehler, Dale Griffin and Michael Ross surveyed psychology students in the final semester of an honours thesis course and asked them to predict as accurately as possible when they would submit. The average prediction was 33.9 days. The average actual time was 55.5 days, and fewer than one third of them, 29.7 per cent, finished within their own best estimate.
The interesting part is what happened when the same students were asked to predict assuming that everything went as poorly as it possibly could. That deliberately pessimistic figure came out at 48.6 days, still short of the real 55.5, and fewer than half of them, 48.7 per cent, met even that. Being asked to imagine the worst case removed some of the optimism and did not improve accuracy at all.
The authors did find something that worked, and it is more specific than it first looks. Simply reminding people of their past performance changed nothing: in one condition students acknowledged that they typically finish only a day before a deadline and then made optimistic predictions anyway. The bias, in the researchers' words, was attenuated only when subjects were induced both to consider their past experiences and to relate the experiences to the task at hand.
For a catch-up plan that translates into one concrete habit. Do not estimate the whole backlog. Recover exactly one unit end to end, one lecture or one chapter, with a clock running, and note the real number. Then multiply. If a single lecture took two and a half hours to recover properly, twelve missed lectures are thirty hours of work, and any plan that implies otherwise is fiction. Almost always the honest number forces the write-off list to grow, which is the point of measuring it. Cutting scope is the only lever that reliably makes a catch-up plan fit the time available.

Beyond that, resist the pull toward chronological order. Feeling behind creates a strong urge to start at the beginning, which is usually the least useful place to start.
